There are people who prefer MV's Jack to MA's Jack, but I have never in all my soap fandom years met anyone whose favorite character of all is MV's Jack, while MA's Jack is plenty of people's #1. Usually those who prefer MV's Jack have as their favorites the big stars of the JER era -- Marlena and/or John, Stefano, Kristen, Sami, etc. I've read fans who started watching in that time period say things like they couldn't tell that Jack and Jennifer were a supercouple and considered them a B tier couple based on how the show was at that time, and I can't say I don't see where they're coming from. MV was my first Jack, and I thought he was more interesting than most of the other characters on the show, he was slightly more grey and slightly less stupid and I rooted for him 1000% against Peter. But his Jack was not enough to make me think that the show was anything other than pretty silly and, eventually, frustrating. Years later when I found the treasure trove of online older Days clips, it became obvious that not only was MA's Jack more complex and layered than MV's Jack, most of the characters of that era were too. Don't get me wrong, I think MV did what he could with what he had and it's probably his fault least of anyone, but I honestly believe that nobody would still be talking about the character at all if it wasn't for MA and the writers of his time (unless it's the way we talk about Pete or something). I get that he's the hunky Jack for a lot of people, but it also just happens that what made Jack catch on in the first place was that he was (to quote Voldemort, and just to get the gist across) the thinking woman's soap hero. JER just so did not get how to write Jack because Jack's greatness relied on him being created without being able to rely on that shirtless beefcake style of sex appeal (because of the character's history of sexual violence). Basically it's like if someone brought back Nick Fallon with Trevor Donovan in the role. I mean, you can, and maybe he'd do a good job, but way to totally miss the point of the character. Plus, you put together a list of the top ten MA as Jack Deveraux scenes, and you put together a list of the top ten MV as Jack Deveraux scenes, and I just can't see how it's even a contest. Same with MV in the J&J couple vs MA in the J&J couple. (Also, with MV in the role I always thought it was a little weird in a Freudian way that Jennifer's brother and ex-husband looked so similar.) |

I love Judi and Wally. But iconic couple? lol Justin and Adrienne aren't Tanner and Molly, but they are not exactly Bo and Hope, Steve and Kayla or John and Marlena.
First of all, I have no idea who Tanner and Molly are and I really have no need to know. Yes, iconic is the word I used to describe my favorite couple, Justin and Adrienne because the word iconic means recognized and well established, they definitely were and I was not comparing them to any of the other Super Couples, who are recognized and well established also. An icon is a person or a thing regarded as a representative symbol of something. So for all intent and purposes, were talking Super Couples. Justin and Adrienne were promoted back in the late 80's as one of five Super Couples, Days was promoting at the time, Shane/Kim, Justin/Adrienne, Jack/Jennifer, Bo/Hope and Steve/Kayla. John was with Diane Colville/Isabella and Yvette and Marlena was not on screen then, but of course they are definitely noted as a Super Couple. You not conjuring up Justin and Adrienne as being iconic is your choice but please allow me to be able to do so. They were all so dame good and special in their own way.
Of course we don't have to agree. I'm going off hard data too, but some of my favorite times with this show have been "low rated" in the Nielsen's. Everyone can love who they want, and I'm glad for any fan base that gets a new shot at enjoying their character/couple. |

They need to get some bigger gains soon. Right now they’re in a cycle of low gains for a couple of weeks, a loss that undercuts the gains, a slow climb back, and then a total loss again. Hopefully sweeps will take care of that. It’s still crazy that they did so well during the hurricane and then couldn’t match that with a pretty large event. |

They would have seen some sort of gain during the wedding if not for the preemptions. Honestly, preemptions have been killing the soaps for the past year bit it is hurting Days especially given it always seems to hit them for crucial episodes. It will be hard to get any kind of ratings momentum if it continues. |

They just can’t seem to hold on to a gain. They’ve had several bumps over the last few months...immediately followed up with a day like Wednesday. |

Agreed. I thought they'd be ahead of where they are now by about 100K-200K viewers with AS's return and some of the big events ("Wedding Interruptus", returning faces). I have a feeling that TPTB are equally surprised. In the meantime I will cling to the fact that, overall, it's still an upward trajectory. |

And while the pre-emptions definitely aren’t helping, it’s worht nothing that there were multiple hurricanes and an eclipse several weeks ago when they got their biggest gains. |
